In connection with the deployment by the regime Aliaksandr Lukashenka of a propaganda campaign to ban the white-red-white flag in the Republic of Belarus, we, Belarusian historians, declare:

Our national state, The Belarusian People's Republic, adopted the ancient emblem The Pahonia, as the state emblem, and the state flag in white-red-white colours, in accordance with the Belarusian folk and historical traditions.

Over the past century, the White-Red-White flag has become a spiritual asset and moral value for millions of Belarusians, regardless of their political views. In 1930, famous communist poet Maxim Tank wrote:

Maxim Tank
Look to the future boldly!
The long-awaited time has come,
Under the white-red-white flag
Victory awaits us.

The use of national symbols by collaborators in Europe during the Second World War was common and should not lead to their discreditation.

We see that states with similar historical experiences, such as Russia, Ukraine, France, Lithuania, Latvia, Croatia, Norway, Denmark and others, value their national flags.
In September 1991, the Supreme Council of the BSSR approved the white-red-white flag as the state flag of the Republic of Belarus. It was under this flag, that in 1994 newly elected president Aliaksandr Lukashenka took his oath.
The current officious propaganda campaign to discredit and ban the national and state symbol of Belarus, the white-red-white flag, has no historical justification, it is leading to a split in society and inciting enmity between the citizens of Belarus.
The organisers and participants of this campaign should not only be held responsible before the court of history, but should also bare legal responsibility.
